Environmental art is a broad and multidisciplinary movement in the visual arts that addresses the relationship between humans and the natural world. Emerging as a distinct practice in the mid-20th century, it encompasses a wide variety of approaches, from large-scale earthworks that reshape the physical landscape to ephemeral installations designed to decompose naturally. Unlike traditional landscape painting, which depicts nature from a distance, environmental art integrates the artwork into the environment itself, often utilizing organic materials such as soil, rock, water, and vegetation. The significance of environmental art lies in its capacity to provoke critical discourse regarding ecology, sustainability, and the Anthropocene. By moving art out of the "white cube" of the gallery and into the open air, artists challenge the commodification of art and the perceived separation between culture and nature. In recent decades, the movement has evolved from the monumental interventions of Land Art to a more restorative practice known as "eco-art," which seeks to actively repair damaged ecosystems or raise awareness about climate change through scientific collaboration. Historically, the movement is rooted in the desire to break free from the constraints of urban industrialization and the commercial art market of the 1960s. It draws upon various influences, including the Romanticist fascination with the sublime, the conceptualism of the 1960s, and the growing environmental movement sparked by publications such as Rachel Carson's Silent Spring (1962). Today, environmental art serves as both an aesthetic exploration and a political tool, documenting the fragility of the planet and the impact of human activity on biodiversity.

Origins and the Rise of Land Art (1960s–1970s)

The precursors to modern environmental art emerged most prominently in the United States and Europe during the late 1960s. This era saw the rise of "Land Art" (or Earthworks), where artists used the earth as their primary medium. These works were often massive in scale and located in remote areas, requiring the viewer to travel to the site, thereby changing the experience of art from a passive viewing to a physical journey.

Robert Smithson is perhaps the most influential figure of this period. His most famous work, Spiral Jetty (1970), consists of a 1,500-foot-long coil of basalt rocks and earth jutting into the Great Salt Lake in Utah. Smithson was interested in the concept of "entropy"—the inevitable decline of systems into disorder. This is reflected in how the Spiral Jetty is periodically submerged or revealed by the fluctuating water levels of the lake.

Similarly, Michael Heizer explored the void and the subtraction of material. His work Double Negative (1969), located in the Nevada desert, consists of two massive trenches cut into a plateau. These works emphasized the geological scale of the landscape and the physical act of displacement.

Ephemeral and Organic Approaches

While early Land Art often involved heavy machinery and permanent alterations to the terrain, a parallel movement emerged that emphasized the ephemeral nature of existence. These artists sought to create works that would eventually be reclaimed by nature, mirroring the biological cycles of growth and decay.

British artist Andy Goldsworthy is a central figure in this tradition. Working primarily with ice, leaves, stones, and twigs, Goldsworthy creates intricate sculptures in situ. His process is deeply meditative; he often spends days crafting a work only for it to be washed away by a tide or melted by the sun. This approach emphasizes the transience of time and the fluidity of the natural environment.

The duo Christo and Jeanne-Claude focused on the intersection of nature and human architecture. Their large-scale "wrapping" projects, such as Surrounded Islands (1983) in Miami, involved encircling islands in pink polypropylene fabric. While their work was temporary, the scale of their interventions forced a public reconsideration of the environment's boundaries and the laws governing public space.

Eco-Art and Ecological Restoration

Starting in the late 20th century, the focus of environmental art shifted from the aesthetic use of the land to the ethical responsibility of protecting it. This transition gave rise to "Eco-Art," where the artwork functions as a catalyst for ecological recovery or a scientific experiment.

Remediation art involves the use of artistic practice to clean up contaminated sites. An example of this is the work of Agnes Denes, whose Wheatfield—A Confrontation (1982) involved planting and harvesting two acres of wheat on a landfill in Lower Manhattan. The project served as a stark contrast between the waste of the city and the productivity of the earth, highlighting global hunger and land mismanagement.

Contemporary environmental artists often collaborate with biologists and climatologists. Some projects utilize "bio-art," incorporating living organisms or synthetic biology to visualize the impact of pollutants. For instance, artists may use specific algae that change color in the presence of toxins, turning the artwork into a living sensor for environmental health.

Theoretical Frameworks and Mathematical Perspectives

Environmental art often engages with the mathematics of nature, specifically the study of fractals and chaos theory. The realization that natural patterns—such as the branching of trees or the coastline of a continent—follow specific mathematical rules has influenced how artists structure their work.

The concept of "scaling" in environmental art can be understood through the relationship between the observer and the landscape. If the area of an installation is denoted by $A$ and the perimeter by $P$, the "fractal dimension" $D$ describes how the complexity of the shape increases as the scale of measurement decreases:

This mathematical underpinning allows artists to create works that feel "natural" because they mimic the self-similar patterns found in the wilderness. By challenging the permanence of the art object, environmental art paved the way for conceptualism and performance art. It also played a pivotal role in the "Green" movement, providing a visual language for the climate crisis. Today, the movement continues to evolve as artists grapple with the challenges of the 21st century, including ocean acidification, deforestation, and the loss of biodiversity.
